AI citation tracking — how Ruhavo measures your brand's AI visibility
Ruhavo tracks whether your brand is cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini by running real queries against each engine and checking the responses for genuine, positive mentions of your brand.
What counts as a citation
Not every mention of your brand name is a citation. If an AI engine says "I don't have information about [brand]" or "this doesn't appear to be a recognized product," your brand name is technically present in the response — but that's a negative result, not a citation. Ruhavo filters these out using a multi-step check: it first confirms your brand name actually appears (accounting for name variations and domain forms), then screens for common negative phrasing, and for anything ambiguous, asks an AI model directly whether the response shows genuine recognition of your brand or just an unfamiliar name being guessed at. Only mentions that pass all three checks count as a real citation.
How the tracking works
Each audit runs a set of queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — covering category questions ("best tool for X"), direct brand questions ("what is [brand]?"), competitor comparisons, problem-solving questions, and trust questions ("is [brand] legit?"). Every query is sent multiple times per engine, since AI responses can vary between runs, and a majority result across those runs determines whether it counts as cited. Your citation rate is the percentage of all these query-engine checks where your brand was genuinely cited.
Which AI engines we track
Ruhavo currently tracks citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini — the engines where brand discovery increasingly happens. Each engine is queried independently so you can see exactly where you're being found and where you're invisible. Claude and Microsoft Copilot are on the roadmap as part of Ruhavo's upcoming GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) expansion.
Why citation rate matters
If AI engines never mention your brand when answering relevant questions, you're invisible in a channel that's becoming a primary way people discover and evaluate products. Your citation rate is one of the three pillars in your Brand Health Score, alongside SEO and CRO.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an AI citation?+
A citation is a response from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini that genuinely recognizes your brand — not just a response where your brand name happens to appear. Ruhavo confirms the name actually shows up, filters out responses with negative or uncertain phrasing, and for anything ambiguous, checks whether the response shows real recognition of your brand.
Why might my brand not be cited even though it exists online?+
AI engines cite brands based on what they recognize as clear, consistent, and well-supported facts — not just whether a website exists. A site with thin content, inconsistent brand details across the web, or nothing for the AI to confidently reference can exist online and still go uncited.
How often does Ruhavo re-check citations?+
Every audit runs citations fresh at that moment. If you have an active monitoring plan, Ruhavo also re-checks automatically — daily or weekly depending on your site's settings — so you can track whether your citation rate is improving over time.
What's the difference between a mention and a citation?+
A mention is just your brand name appearing somewhere in an AI response — including in a negative or dismissive context, like the AI saying it doesn't recognize the brand. A citation is a mention that passes Ruhavo's checks for genuine, positive recognition. Every citation includes a mention, but not every mention is a citation.
